WP Courseware, a Moodle alternative for WordPress Addict

What is WP Courseware?
WP Courseware is a WordPress premium plugin that allows you to create an online curriculum or “e-course”. You simply engineer your course with modules and add units within the modules depending on how you want to set up your curriculum or sequential content. You can add video to your units, textual content, or even downloadable lessons. You can order the units by simply dragging and dropping within the various modules. Finally, a learning management system WordPress plugin will make it easy to run your online training course. With WP Courseware, the sky is the limit!

WP Courseware integrates with some of the most popular membership plugins like WishList Member, Magic Member, S3, and WP Member. This integration creates a powerful online membership e-course which places you in full control of your content.

We created a demo site for you to get a feel of an actual course built with WP Courseware. You must register to enter the course. A password will be sent to your email, then you can simply login and see the course outline, modules and units.

WP Courseware was born out of our need to effectively engage with students in our own training course and as such, it includes several handy, powerful features for site owners who need to structure their content for:

  • membership training courses
  • online e-learning courses
  • consulting courses
  • personal development programs
  • private coaching
  • educational institutions
  • training employees or VAs

Once WP Courseware is installed, you have the ability to create unlimited courses, which are the foundations of the plugin. Once you have created a course, you can add unlimited modules within each course. Modules are designed to help you organize individual course units into groups, or themes.

Creating a Course

The first step is to create a new course in WP Courseware. When creating a new course, you have a few steps and options:

Create the course title and description

  1. Choose whether you want all units available for access or only make units available as students complete the previous unit
  2. Choose whether you want to automatically or manually assign newly registered users to a course
  3. Choose whether or not you want to send students emails when they complete modules and/or units. Email templates are completely customizable.
  4. Choose whether you (the instructor) want to receive notification messages when students complete modules and courses. Again, email templates are provided.

Creating a Module

The next step is to add modules to your course. Again, you can add custom titles and descriptions to each module within the course. If you have multiple courses, you will have the option to choose which course the module should be associated with.

Creating Course Units

A course is made up of modules and modules consist of individual course units. Course units within WP Courseware use a custom post type structure, so anything that can be added to a standard post or page in WordPress can be integrated within a course unit.

Course units can be created three ways:

Creating a new unit from scratch, just like creating a post

  1. Converting existing posts or pages to course units with one-click
  2. Importing units from other WP Courseware courses

You can add text, video, files, forms, or audio to a unit; again, anything that can be included in a standard WordPress post or page can be published in a course unit.

Structuring Your Course

Once a course has been set up, modules have been created, and units have been created, converted, or imported, you can simply drag and drop them into the appropriate modules, change the order of units within a module, and change the order of modules within a course.

Placing Your Course On Your Site

Once your course is all set up and ordered, the course outline can be placed anywhere on your WordPress site you choose, using either shortcode or the custom WP Courseware widget.

The shortcode allows you to display a sequential course outline to students with several variables, which are all described in the documentation within the plugin:

 

  • Course: choose which course to display
  • Course Title: choose whether or not to display the course title
  • Course Description: choose whether or not to display the course description
  • Modules: choose which specific module to display, or display all modules
  • Module Description: choose whether or not to display the module description

 

These variables allow you to create one page for your entire course outline, create separate pages for each course module, or create pages for both the entire course and each individual module.

Tracking Student Progress

Administrators or instructors also have the ability to track a student’s progress through a course. This is done by simply clicking on the default “Users” tab in the WordPress admin sidebar.

Importing and Exporting Courses

Again, WP Courseware has the ability to export and import entire courses and their content as XML files. This is a useful feature for transferring courses between domains or duplicating courses for other instructors to use.

Dulu, ya tidak terlalu dulu. Beberapa waktu lalu yang tidak terlalu lama. Saya sempat berpikir bahwa menjadi pengajar itu profesi yang relatif enak. Ya, hanya perlu santai di kelas, menyampaikan materi yang telah disampaikan bertahun-tahun dan diulang lagi, ngasih PR, dan selesai. Tapi kenyataannya tidak semudah itu. Mengajar yang dilakukan dengan hati ternyata menuntut energi lebih. Apalagi jika yang diajar memiliki antusiasme yang bagus sehingga meminta waktu extra untuk belajar di luar jam belajar reguler. Ya, butuh energi extra.

Beberapa bulan terakhir saya mengajar Cisco Networking Academy di lab saya. Lab jaringan Telekomunikasi Elektro ITS. Bukan, saya bukan dosen. Saya masih mahasiswa, kebetulan saja diberi amanah untuk mengajar di academy. Pengalaman mengajar ini memberi banyak masukan buat saya bahwa mengajar itu tidak semudah ongkang-ongkang kaki. Mengajar itu menyangkut mood, perofrmance, dan dedikasi. Contohnya aja ini ya, pernah suatu ketika saya sudah hampir dua minggu gak ketemu si manyun. Terus kami lagi keluar, makan bareng. Kebetulan keluarnya agak sorean dan malamnya jam 7 ada jadwal ngajar di lab. Sebenarnya kalau nuruti keinginan pribadi, saya milih lebih lama ketemu si manyun. Tapi karena ini kewajiban, maka harus segera balik ke lab.

Pernah juga ketika skill based assignment ada seorang peserta yang pekerjaan paket trcacertnya tidak beranjak sama sekali dari angka semula. Blas, dia sama sekali gak ada ide mau ngonfig itu router seperti apa. Bengong geje, sama seperti saya ketika ujian SKD. hahaha. Lalu saya tawarkan ke dia untuk saya ajari secara personal, barangkali dia bisa menyerap lebih. Ya, tentu akhirnya saya harus menyediakan waktu extra untuk ngasih “private” belajar buat satu peserta ini. Kasus yang sama terjadi dengan bapak-bapak mahasiswa STTAL yang ikut academy di lab. Karena tugas mendadak, apel, dan berbagai “army stuff” lainnya mereka sering tidak bisa bergabung dalam kelas. Salah saya? tentu bukan. jadi sebenarnya secara moral saya sudah tidak punya tanggung jawab apa-apa atas ketidakhadiran mereka. Tapi tidak bisa seperti itu, saya harus apresiasi kesungguhan mereka. Tentunya tidak mudah menjalankan tugas sebagai tentara dan masih tertarik dengan pelatihan jaringan. Maka saya alokasikan waktu sendiri untuk mengajar mereka bertiga. Bahkan bukan cuma sekali, tapi beberapa kali karena memang mereka ketinggalan cukup banyak chapter. Ya, ternyata mengajar tidak sesederhana itu kan? Kalau dalam pendekatan rumus matematika, kalau semua variabel itu dipenuhi, maka akan rumit. menjadi sesederhana itu karena banya variabel yang diabaikan. Menjadi sesederhana itu pula dalam mengajar jika transfer ilmunya diabaikan dan hanya variabel gugurnya kewajiban saja yang dihitung.

Well, sebenarnya malam ini tiba-tiba pengen nulis ini karena kondisinya besok saya harus mengajar. Jam 9 pagi. Saya sudah janji mau membuatkan materi praktek yang lebih mudah dipahami daripada materi yang ada di modul. Tapi sampai jam segini belum juga bikin. hahaha. Dan, besok tanggal merah. Damn!

Anggap saja ini latihan kalau-kalau besok punya anak, kan bisa bantu-bantu istri ngajar anak. wkwkwkw. istri aja belum punya udah mikir anak. Ro, siro.. geje.
